PlayStation in September 2026: Everything That Happened

September delivered one of PlayStation’s biggest showcase moments of the year, a nearly two-hour double-header that finally gave Final Fantasy VII: Revelation a release date, alongside a genuine flood of smaller reveals heading into Tokyo Game Show. Here’s everything worth knowing.

A Two-Hour State of Play Double-Header

Sony aired its Fall State of Play on September 3, running nearly two hours across a main showcase immediately followed by State of Play Japan, its last major broadcast before Tokyo Game Show later in the month.

The headline news: Final Fantasy VII: Revelation closed out the main show with an extended gameplay look and its first confirmed release date, April 8, 2027. The card game Queen’s Blood returns within it, with Red XIII taking over his own questline this time.

The show opened differently than usual, with director Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) sharing an exclusive clip from his Resident Evil film adaptation ahead of its September 18 premiere, before moving into games. Marvel’s Wolverine got its final trailer ahead of a September 15 launch, showing off a roster including Jean Grey, Sentinels, Sabertooth, Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, and Mystique.

Ghost of Yotei got real substance, not just a mode announcement. Its Complete Edition, launching October 1, bundles the base game with two new additions: Echoes of Sekigahara, a narrative expansion exploring Atsu’s past, and Most Wanted, a free roguelike combat-survival mode. Most Wanted lets players choose from four characters, Atsu, Oyuki, Nagato, and, in the show’s biggest fan-service moment, Jin Sakai, the original protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima, returning with his four original combat stances intact. Existing owners don’t need the full Complete Edition to get the new content either, it’s available as a standalone $14.99 upgrade.

Until Dawn 2 also got a proper reveal, confirming a January 28, 2027 release date on PS5 from developer Firesprite, working alongside AdHoc Studio (the team behind Dispatch). Pre-orders opened September 10. And in a smaller but eye-catching reveal, Sony showed off limited-edition GTA 6-themed DualSense controllers ahead of that game’s November launch.

Other reveals from the show included Maneater 2 (from Tripwire Interactive and Demiurge Studios, landing in 2027 across PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC), Konami’s Rhapsody in Scarlet (a new action-adventure set in a jazz-soundtracked, Prohibition-era 1920s New York), Bandai Namco’s Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, a Fate/Extra Record remake, and Metro 2039, confirmed for February 4, 2027 on PS5, Xbox, and PC. Crimson Desert got an expansion trailer, “Charting the Unknown,” releasing October 15. Pearl Abyss’s Daba: Land of Water Scar resurfaced with new footage, confirming the PS5 exclusive is still in active development. Lego also revealed a new set modeled after the original PlayStation console, complete with a controller and memory cards. Four new games were announced for PlayStation Plus, with Mega Man X: Command Mission heading to Premium Classics later this year.

One quieter but notable item: Double Fine’s Keeper, an Xbox and PC console exclusive since its October 2025 debut, shadow-launched on PlayStation 5 the same day as the State of Play, September 3, a visible sign of how last year’s Xbox divestments are still playing out across the industry.

State of Play Japan and the Road to Tokyo Game Show

The Japan-focused segment immediately following the main show dug into titles from Japanese and Asian studios. Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance got new detail from producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, covering a new area called the Skybound Eyrie, a new Boost Action mechanic, and newly revealed Elder Dragon Gundoraja, with a hands-on demo against the monster Arakeeta confirmed playable at Tokyo Game Show. Sword Art Online picked up a new winter 2026 DLC chapter, “Echoes of Aincrad,” adding a new curved-sword weapon type, and The Eminence in Shadow: Phantom Echoes was confirmed as that light-novel series’ first console game.

The PlayStation Store also kicked off a Tokyo Game Show promotion on September 9, running through September 23, with up to 75 percent off a wide range of games including Stellar Blade: Complete Edition, Forza Horizon 5, and Monster Hunter Wilds.

GTA 6 Remains Relevant Even Without a Direct Tie

As one of GTA 6’s two confirmed launch platforms, PlayStation stayed connected to September’s biggest ongoing industry story. Take-Two shifted legal tactics on September 3, filing a sealed subpoena after reportedly identifying two Discord accounts tied to the leaks, a move specifically meant to avoid tipping off suspects before evidence could be deleted. Reporting this month also suggested PlayStation pre-orders for GTA 6 are meaningfully outpacing Xbox’s, even as Xbox executives claimed their own share matches the platform’s overall console market share.

Where Things Stand Heading Into October

With Tokyo Game Show wrapping its longest-ever five-day run this month and Ghost of Yotei’s Complete Edition landing October 1, PlayStation heads into autumn with a genuinely full pipeline: Marvel’s Wolverine already out, Crimson Desert’s expansion and Ghost of Yotei’s new content both due in October, Until Dawn 2 confirmed for January 28, 2027, and Final Fantasy VII: Revelation giving fans a real target to look forward to on April 8, 2027.
